Kudos to San Mateo Co. for starting this program. So many people fall through the cracks and land in the jail system when what they really need is help with following up with social services and health care. Over time, this may even save the county money.
Thank you, Supervisor Horsley, for pushing forward this pilot program. Having a mental health professional on the first response team could be the difference between life and death in some situations. I hope the program is successful.
I applaud Chief Barberini's leadership on this issue. Adding a mental health clinician that is dedicated to one PD is something I wish all PD's could have. Providing training to build each officer's emotional IQ is really seeing the big picture. Big kudos to SMPD.
