CAMPBELL — Quick action by two Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies is being credited with saving a newborn’s life.
The deputies, Rick Chaeff and Mike Laddy, were at a coffee shop in Campbell Monday morning when a woman came in and said her granddaughter, who was just 17 days old, was not breathing.
Laddy and Chaeff called for emergency crews and rushed outside to help. The girl, named Isys, was limp and purple as she lay in her mother, 22-year-old Bernice Brown’s, arms.
So Chaeff began CPR. Chaeff said he had never performed CPR on a baby that young. But on the fourth try, he was able to force air into her body. She eventually started breathing on her own and let out a cry.
The girl was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, where she is being held for observation. It’s not clear what caused her to stop breathing.
