SACRAMENTO — The director of the University of Southern California’s political institute has been named chairman of the state commission that regulates campaign financing in California.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Tuesday that Dan Schnur will take over the California Fair Political Practices Commission. He had been director of USC’s Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics since 2008.
Schnur previously was spokesman for former Republican Gov. Pete Wilson and for U.S. Sen. John McCain’s 2000 presidential campaign.
He will replace Ross Johnson, a former Republican lawmaker who stepped down in April, citing poor health.
Schnur, who is 46, will finish Johnson’s term, which ends Jan. 31. He will be paid more than $132,000.
The commission was created when voters approved the Political Reform Act of 1974.
