SAN DIEGO — A federal jury in San Diego has awarded more than $2 million to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who says he was roughed up by Chula Vista police officers during an undercover operation.
Tuesday’s verdict finds the officers used excessive force against ICE agent Sergio Lopez while he was doing surveillance work in the San Diego suburb in October 2006.
Lopez says in his complaint that officers who pulled him over after he used a siren on his car pressed his arm severely, put his head against the asphalt and threatened him with a stun gun.
The Chula Vista Police Department said it was disappointed with the ruling. The department says all five employees named in the lawsuit acted appropriately.
