LOS ANGELES -- California health officials say cuts to a state mammogram program for low income women will continue indefinitely. California Department of Public Health spokesman Al Lundeen says services under the Every Woman Counts program were contingent on legislators reaching a budget deal by July 1, but no deal is in sight. A ban on new enrollments that was instituted in January will continue beyond a target end date of June 30, and the age to qualify to return for annual services for existing customers will stay at 50. Before cuts to the program, women over 40 were eligible. Declining revenues from tobacco taxes and increasing costs were cited by the state as reasons for the cuts.
