DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Israel killed another top Iranian official — the intelligence minister — in its campaign against the Islamic Republic's leadership, and reportedly attacked an Iranian offshore natural gas field Wednesday amid the war's escalating pressure on the region's economic lifeblood: energy.

Iran has been striking its Persian Gulf neighbors' energy facilities since the U.S. and Israel launched the war on Feb. 28, and has made the Strait of Hormuz shipping channel — through which one-fifth of the world's oil travels — nearly impassable. On Wednesday, an Iranian missile hit a major natural gas facility in Qatar.

The Strait of Hormuz is a small strip of water connecting the Persian Gulf to the world’s oceans. On a typical day, ships carrying about a fifth of the world’s oil sail out of the Gulf through the narrow passageway, but the war with Iran means it’s effectively closed, hemming in more than 90% of that crude and refined products. AP's Philip Crowther explains more.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday he is "not ready to leave" Iran yet, but vowed an exit "in the very near future." The president also told reporters he's not worried about a long, protracted war like Vietnam, saying, “I’m really not afraid of anything."
