Following a devastating fire at the Escondido Humane Society, responsible for taking the lives of nearly 100 animals, Peninsula Humane Society took a collection among staff to aid the border-area shelter.
With matching personal funds donated by the PHS Board of Directors and contributions from others in the PHS community, including shelter volunteers, PHS will send $1,700 to Escondido on Monday.
"Several of us had the same idea when we heard the news," said Communications Director Scott Delucchi. "Our Events Coordinator acted first and sent an e-mail message to all staff asking for aid. Within minutes, she several donations."
"This is a real testament to the kind of people we have on staff," said Board President Nov Omana. "The Board was happy to help with personal contributions and proud, once again, to be associated with this staff."
The Escondido shelter housed most animals in one large building and did not have staff working at the time of the fire. PHS always has staff in the building and animals -- which include dogs, cats, other small domestic wildlife and exotics -- would have more protection since they are housed in different buildings. PHS staff are currently implementing a full-scale evacuation plan which will include the transfer of animals to other facilities if necessary.<
