An arrest warrant was issued for the stabbing death of Timothy Griffith after a San Francisco Giant baseball game on Sept. 17, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and Police Chief Heather Fong announced Friday.
Rafael Antonio Cuevas, 22, of San Francisco, is suspected of killing Griffith, 21, of Redwood City, who was stabbed in the heart after brushing up against the suspect's car as he walked with friends along Terry A. Francois Boulevard around 10 p.m., police said.
Griffith's mother and father attended the 5 p.m. news conference where they thanked the media for its coverage of the case and voiced their satisfaction with the city's efforts in identifying a suspect.
"These are animals. These are people with no regard for human life,'' said Josh Griffith, Timothy's father. "It's time to pull these animals in.''
Cuevas was identified through his work associates, who reported him to police after he failed to show up to work on Monday. The associates had apparently recognized the description of the white vehicle, which Cuevas had allegedly purchased from his employer. Dozens of tips that poured into police following the incident also helped them to identify the suspect.
As many as five people were in the suspect car, described as a white, four-door, 1997 Toyota Corolla with the license plate no. 3VVT705, according to police.
The announcement comes on the same day as funeral services for Griffith, held Friday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Redwood City.
