Friday marked the busiest shopping day of the year. Hillsdale Mall in San Mateo saw its share of some of the holiday shopping glee and shared in a fair amount of the green and gold tradition as well - (that is green for cash and gold for the Gold card). What Hillsdale Mall saw very little of, however, was disruption.
According to the mall security, this year's day-after Thanksgiving Sale attracted far more customers than last year and far fewer problems and complaints. The chief complaint from customers according to security personnel was parking.
"In terms of incidents, it's been really quiet," he said, meaning that theft, violence, or other major disturbances had not been a problem that day.
He went on to say that all Mall personnel were on deck Friday to handle the larger than usual number of consumers that traditionally head to the Mall to christen the shopping season on the day after Thanksgiving.
Security personnel, cashiers, food handlers, gift wrapping personnel and sales attendants were all supplemented on Friday to accommodate the added business.
At Macy's cosmetic desk during the afternoon, a line of attendants bumped into each other and moved around boxes all trying to remain smiling while across the street at the Good Guys the telephone rang off the hook as everyone wanted to know if the new Sony Play Station 2 was in fact on the shelves.
At the end of the day, however, a lot of the managers appeared frazzled and tired but generally satisfied. While counting up the evening receipts, the manager at the Discovery Zone was in fact all smiles. "It's been a good day. Typically that means its going to be a good season. I hope that's true. I'm looking forward to a few more days like this one."
