An accident on a busy San Jose intersection Friday afternoon has left an infant dead after a car struck his stroller and the woman pushing it.
The accident occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Almaden Road and Curtner Avenue. A red Honda traveling northbound on Almaden struck the woman and stroller, standing at the corner of the intersection, after some type of interaction with a white pick-up truck, according to San Jose Police Department spokesman Steve Dixon.
"They got hit from behind," Dixon said. "The woman is expected to recover from her injuries, unfortunately the child died, was pronounced dead at (Santa Clara) Valley Medical Center."
The Honda struck two other vehicles after striking the woman and infant. The infant was approximately 8 to 10 months old and the woman was his childcare provider, not his grandmother as previously reported by some media organizations, Dixon said.
Investigators are currently trying to piece together what caused the accident. The drivers of all of the vehicles are present and being interviewed.
"It doesn't look at this point that alcohol was involved," Dixon said.
The intersection will remain closed for several more hours and the Curtner Avenue off-ramp from State Highway 87 has also been closed for investigators.
The identity of the infant is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.
