Stiffening regulation, government shortfalls and long-term leasing trends are contributing to the life science industry’s sluggish recovery, marked by ongoing layoffs and a tight funding landscape.

San Mateo County has the largest life science workforce of all nine Bay Area counties, according to a recent Biocom California report, but employee growth declined slightly between 2022 and 2023, averaging a 2% year-over-year employment drop throughout the entire region. Statewide, the industry experienced a 0.6% employment drop and 15% decrease in venture capital deals from 2022 — the lowest number of such deals in at least six years.
