Aimed at reducing the amount of illegal fireworks in San Mateo County and the dangers that come with them, the Sheriff’s Office and partners are planning a series of buyback events in June.
The first buyback event in North Fair Oaks was a success in 2023, according to the Sheriff’s Office, with approximately 400 pounds of illegal fireworks and explosives collected and fewer related calls for service on July 4.
Last year, the program expanded to the coast and North County, with a cash incentive of $200 for turning them in, with more than 700 pounds of illegal fireworks collected across three events.
This year, the events will be 10 a.m. to p.m. on Saturday, June 7, at the Northern Branch Courthouse, 1050 Mission Road, South San Francisco, and Saturday, June 14, at the new Sheriff’s Substation, 690 Broadway, Redwood City.
Partner agencies include Brisbane Police Department, the Broadmoor Police Department, the Central County Fire Department, the Colma Police Department, the Daly City Police Department, the East Palo Alto Police Department, the Redwood City Police Department, the San Bruno Police Department and the South San Francisco Fire and Police departments.
For folks who have sources for purchasing illegal (not really sure what qualifies) fireworks, is there an arbitrage opportunity here? Buy illegal fireworks for $100 and turn around and sell for $200? Similar to what some folks do when there are gun buybacks? BTW, what happens with the newly purchased fireworks? Sold to a locale which considers these fireworks legal?
