A great white shark ripped through man’s surfboard Friday morning while he was surfing near Half Moon Bay along the San Mateo County Coast.
Paul Euwer, a natural history film director from Santa Barbara, said he was surfing out to check the mavericks, researching some possible locations for an upcoming film project. When he saw the 10-foot-long great white shark come at him.
“The shark hit my board and launched me and it out of the water. He worked the board for a little bit, then realized it wasn’t food and swam away,” Euwer said, over the telephone after making it safely home to his wife and children.
The 34-year-old says nothing like this has ever happened to him before. “And it will never happen again, I hope,” Euwer added.
After the incident, he quickly notified Harbor Patrol so they could contact the other surfers and get them all out of the water.
He said he board was totally destroyed. The great white left a bite mark in the board that measures approximately 13 inches.

Euwer, however, managed to get away unharmed, though he was obviously shaken up.
“The surfboard is just a memento now. I’m going to hang it up on the wall,” Euwer said.
According to Euwer, it did not deter everyone that was out on Friday from continuing to surf the waters. “A lot of people go out, but some others stayed,” he added, saying it was an unusually busy day for the area.
No other incidents were reported to Harbor Patrol as of Friday afternoon.
Harbor Patrol posted notices about the great white being in the vicinity after the attack.
