A year-round schedule for Abbott Middle School in San Mateo is expected to be weighed Thursday night at the San Mateo-Foster City School District board meeting.
The schedule would start in fall 2006 and a district survey showed about three-fourths of parents approve of the change or are willing to accept it.
Supports said shorter breaks through the school year would increase students' retention of material and ease some stress. More breaks would also give struggling students a chance to catch up while allowing strong students to enroll in extra enrichment programs.
Parents and teachers not in favor of a year-round program would have a year to transfer schools.
Trustee Charles Perry supports the switch because he said students perform better.
The board meets 7 p.m. Thursday at 42 W. 42nd Ave. in San Mateo.
