Eight local high schools scored in the top 5 percent nationwide, according to a Newsweek ranking released this week.
Five schools in the San Mateo Union High School District and three in the Sequoia Union High School District were listed in the top 1,300 public schools on a Newsweek ranking released this week.
San Mateo High School was at the top of the local list with a rank of 187 — 20 spots higher than rival Burlingame High School which ranked 207. Public schools were ranked according to a ratio created by Newsweek education reporter Jay Matthews. The number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Cambridge tests taken by all students at the school in 2006 is divided by the number of graduating seniors.

All schools on the list scored at least 1.000 placing them in the top 5 percent of schools measured, according to the Newsweek Web site.
Mills High School in Millbrae is ranked 246. Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton ranked 264. Aragon High School in San Mateo received the 386th spot. Sequoia High School in Redwood City is ranked 640. Hillsdale High School in San Mateo earned the 717 spot. Carlmont High School ranked 1,111.
The top two spots overall were held by schools in Dallas.
