On a Friday afternoon in late June, San Mateo police Detective Dustin Lorensen headed to T.J. Maxx off Concar Drive, responding to a potential retail theft.

By the time he arrived, several officers were already gathered in the nearby Trader Joe’s parking lot, speaking with the suspect, a woman in her 60s, as well as the store’s loss prevention agents, or employees who monitor the premises for potential shoplifters.

Some of the responses mention that stricter enforcement has a disastrous effect on particularly young offenders. Now, let's ask a question? What about the disastrous effect on the vast majority of us that now cannot even shop freely without having to ask personnel to retrieve a tube of toothpaste? Why are we so complacent that we still allow the bleeding hearts that cater to a minority to control our quality of life? In a recent interview with the president of El Salvador, he made this point. Why do 5 million Salvadorans have to suffer from incredible crime waves perpetrated by several thousand gang members? He is accused of stuffing 48,000 of them in jail but El Salvador is likely safer now than our cities like Chicago and New York. He asked, aren't the human rights of 5 million Salvadorans more important than the forfeited rights of those now locked up? We need such leadership here and our lives will return to what it once was.

Not So Common

As Terrence said, keep voting democrat if you believe shoplifting and criminal behavior deserves a slap on the wrist. While we are at vote the leader of the do nothing gang AG Rob Bonta out of office since he believes every criminal is a victim and every victim is a criminal.

I'm a slightly left-of-center independent. Democratic policies have wrecked the state, but I find it very difficult to vote for Trumpian Republicans. As much as I'd like to vote for tough-on-crime politicians, I won't do that if it means putting Trump cult members into office.

CoastalBoy, and that's your prerogative but you’ll have to live with the status quo. BTW, did you see the article regarding outmigration incomes (https://www.thecentersquare.com/california/article_92bca3b8-3993-11ef-802a-af9f81ed090c.html)? Apparently higher income folks aren’t okay with living with the status quo. Good for them but bad for California tax revenues. Don’t be surprised when you see more tax increases, early and often.

Not So Common

And what is so wrong with draining the swamp, (both sides) and making America Great Again? Limiting and reducing crime, prosecuting real criminals, low taxation, limited government, limited regulations, limiting wasteful government spending, freedom of speech, right to bear arms like Sotomayor, eliminating pay to play schemes, NOT attacking and prosecuting one's political enemies, lowering inflation, providing solutions to problems rather than just throwing and wasting money on things, ending homelessness, ... etc..

Voters, you get the government you vote for. And this is what it’s come to. All the signs were there that folks would migrate and use Peninsula cities as “free” shopping malls. Folks will continue doing the crime if there’s no threat of serving any time. Win-win, for these folks. Lose-lose for law abiding citizens. Make better choices when you vote. You’ve seen the results from our current crop of so-called officials.

You do understand voters passed this bill, not "so called leaders"

Terence Y

DS32, I don’t understand your comment…perhaps a bit more clarification? Because if voters can pass bills, why do we need a legislative branch? Voters cannot pass bills unless we’re talking dollar bills and then everyone can pass those, voter or not.
