Police Chief Ryan Johansen announced last week he is leaving the city of San Bruno in early 2025 as he accepted the same position for the town of Apex, North Carolina.
Johansen has served San Bruno for nearly two decades, the last five as police chief. Johansen began as a police officer with San Bruno in 2006. Over that time, he rose through the ranks of the department becoming the police chief in March 2020. During his tenure, he implemented an industry-leading organizational wellness program, the “Mindful Badge
Initiative,” and successfully addressed recruitment and retention challenges despite a nationwide hiring shortage for law enforcement professionals.
The city of San Bruno will begin an immediate nationwide search for a new police chief. Johansen will officially depart Feb. 23.
