The SamTrans board today voted to continue its partnership with BART on its extension to San Francisco airport rather than opting out of financial responsibility for the operating costs and deficits.
The unanimous vote at a meeting this afternoon in San Carlos means that the San Mateo County Transit District will not only share in the costs of running the new extension, but will also share control of and revenues from service levels, ferry surcharges, the SFO premium fare and ancillary revenues such as concessions and development around stations.
Board Chair Mike Nevin said the partnership was "a gamble," but an important part of regional cooperation on transportation issues.
"If they succeed, we succeed, if they fail we fail. We have to succeed or fail as a region," he said.
