Glenna Vaskelis, president of Sequoia Hospital, started crying at Wednesday's hospital board meeting. She welled up during a presentation about the future plans for Sequoia hospital. "It's more than just brick and mortar," she said. Vaskelis said not enough people are giving credit to the nurses and doctors who make the hospital what it is. The stress has been a little much, Vaskelis left for a vacation Thursday.

Speaking of Sequoia ... Jack Hickey said he wanted to wait until the primaries were over to form a committee to find interested people in running for the Sequoia Healthcare District Board. Hickey says he's been approached by a number of people who want to be on the board. Hickey - who already sits on the board - said he wants to replace Malcolm McNaughton, Kathleen Kane and Edward Katz. The candidates must past one litmus test - they must be in favor of dissolving the district.

Anti-abortion activist Ross Fotti said someone has vandalized his truck. The truck is well-known in the community for having large posters of aborted fetuses.

Those 11 eucalyptus trees chopped down in Burlingame are creating quite a stir. The trees were tested and determined to be diseased, but residents are still skeptical. After the chopping is done, a trimming project from Newlands to Sanchez is in the works. Bob Hoss of Caltrans estimates it will begin this month.

BULB - or Burlingamers Unwilling to Live with Blackouts - is reporting that blackouts have been reduced by 85 percent since its formation in 2002. BULB founder Terry Nagel used her advocacy in reducing blackouts to help propel her onto the City Council in November.

Burlingame City Councilwoman Cathy Baylock is reportedly upset that half the city's crossing guards are set to be eliminated. Budget cuts are prompting Police Chief Fred Palmer to make the decision. The city's Police Department will be at 1977 levels with new budget cuts.

Foster City Mayor Marland Townsend - who endorsed Joe Simitian for state Senate - said it was one of the hardest endorsements he's ever had to make. Simitian's opponent, Ted Lempert, is son to San Mateo Councilwoman Sue Lempert - one of the area's best city leaders, Townsend said.

San Carlos' S.C.O.O.T. shuttle program will receive the 2004 SAMCEDA award for excellence by a public agency on Monday. The program will also receive certificates of recognition by state senators Jackie Speier and Byron Sher and Assemblymen Joe Simitian and Gene Mullin.

Speaking of San Carlos, Councilman Tom Davids won't be at Monday night's meeting for good reason - his son is returning home to San Diego from Iraq. "We have to go meet the boat," Davids quipped.
