Redwood City's After School Learning Centers, or ASLC, program has been awarded a grant of more than $800,000 from the California Department of Education.
The three-year grant, totaling $807,594, will be split between Kennedy, Taft and Hoover schools in increments of about $269,000 a year.
The City of Redwood City, the Redwood City School District, Healthy Start Services and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office all collaborated to develop the ASLC program in an effort to keep kids out of trouble earlier in their lives.
Redwood City officials say the centers give kids a better chance to avoid getting involved in gangs and other harmful activities by providing academic, social and recreational activities for students performing below their grade level who are also considered to be at-risk for potential drug use or gang involvement.
The program has partnered with community agencies, parents and volunteers to expand and deliver a wide range of after-school program activities. Since September 2000, the program has directly reached nearly 500 students in second through eighth grade in seven targeted schools, officials say.<
