The Port of Redwood City handled a record high 1.4 million metric tons during the first three quarters of the fiscal year, the Port Commission announced this week.
The record tonnage has the port on pace to pass the yearly record set last year at just under 1.5 million metric tons.
Increased trade with Asia for scrap metal, a strong demand for construction materials from Asia and the Pacific Northwest and the improving U.S. economy were major factors triggering increased tonnage at all West Coast ports.
The first three quarters of the fiscal year - which ends June 30 - saw 123 vessels call on the port compared to 98 during the same period last year.
