Driven by the region’s ongoing development boom, cargo movement at the Port of Redwood City reached historic numbers for the first half of its fiscal year.
The continuing construction boom in Redwood City and Silicon Valley is creating high demand for construction materials shipped to the port, mostly from British Columbia, Port Executive Director Mike Giari said in a press release.
From July 1 to Dec. 31, 2017, cargo tonnage moving across the docks hit 1,213,042 metric tons, a 41 percent increase over the same period in the prior fiscal year. The port in six months is only 600,000 tons away from hitting its projection of 1.8 million tons for the entire fiscal year, and is on pace to top its busiest year in 2005, when it received 1,908,172 tons of cargo.
Over the six months, the port welcomed 79 vessels — 49 more than last year-including 35 cargo ships, 27 barges and 17 other vessels.
“We weren’t expecting this many vessels but we’re happy to have them,” said Assistant Manager of Operations Giorgio Garilli.

The only deep-water port in the south San Francisco Bay, the Port of Redwood City handles aggregates mostly, which are then transported by truck around the region as far south as San Jose.
CEMEX, a Mexican building materials company, imported 985,528 tons of sand and other construction materials over the six-month period, totaling 70 percent of the Port’s tonnage. Other bulk cargo passing through the port includes bauxite, gypsum and scrap iron metal.
“It’s a good outlook,” Garilli said. “More vessels mean more money.”
