For the 12th year in a row, the University of California had record-breaking numbers of applicants for undergraduate programs, according to UC officials.
UC officials said all nine of the UC campuses saw gains in total applications for fall 2016, as more than 206,000 students applied to attend as undergraduates.
According to UC officials, this was the first time the total number of applicants, which includes transfer students, topped 200,000.
“The increase in applications from Californians will help us reach our goal of adding 5,000 more undergraduate residents this year and 10,000 over three years,” UC president Jan Napolitano said in a statement.
Napolitano said, “In particular, our efforts to boost the number of applicants transferring from California’s community colleges are paying off.”
According to UC officials, transfer applications rose 11.8 percent after the university announced a one-time extension of the application deadline from Nov. 30 to Jan 4 in an effort to boost enrollment of California students.
UC Merced had the largest increase of applications with 13.5 percent more applications than in 2015. In total, an overall jump of 6.4 percent more students applied for admissions across all the UC campuses, university officials said.
