A moderate earthquake sent a sharp jolt through the San Francisco Bay area Sunday afternoon.
The magnitude 4.4 quake was centered 11 miles east of San Jose in a hilly, uninhabited section of the Calaveras fault, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. It struck at 3:18 p.m.
San Jose police spokesman Sgt. Steve Dixon said he had no reports of damage or injury.
"At the dispatch center, they're a little bored," Dixon joked. "They were expecting a lot of calls, but it's not much more than a typical Sunday."
The quake was felt as far south as Santa Cruz, north into Marin County and east in Modesto of the Central Valley.

It lasted about five seconds and was followed by a series of smaller aftershocks, including one of magnitude 2.1.
"Earthquakes of this size not unusual for this section of the Calaveras," said Lind Gee, seismologist at the UC Berkeley Seismological Laboratory.
This quake one was strong enough, however, that within half an hour a USGS Web site had logged 1,100 users reporting the quake.
Its epicenter was just north of the magnitude 6.2 Morgan Hill earthquake of 1984.<
