The Peninsula Art Foundation will celebrate its creation with a special exhibit opening 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, at the Twin Pines Art Center, 10 Twin Pines Lane in Belmont.
The nonprofit foundation was created to aid San Mateo County artists secure low-cost studio space at a time when rents have been steadily increasing.
Ruth Waters, an award-winning sculptor and former founder and director of the Peninsula Museum of Art, got the idea after seeing all the vacant retail spaces resulting from closures created by the pandemic. At the same time, management of San Bruno’s Shops at Tanforan, faced with more vacancies than anticipated had begun their own search for alternatives. Tanforan first reached out to the new operators of the Peninsula Museum of Art, which had lost its space in Burlingame.
Working with artists and community leaders, the foundation was formed and, in late 2021, leases were signed for over 10,000 square feet of space in two former retail locations within the mall.
Known as Art Zones 1 and 2 the spaces incorporate areas for art classes, working space for artists of all sorts and gallery space. All open to the public.
In addition to Ms. Waters, the foundation’s Board of Directors includes Steve Seymour, San Bruno artist and chair of the San Mateo County Arts Commission; San Bruno Police Chief Ryan Johansen; Aileen Cassinetto, poet laureate of San Mateo County; Marco Durazo, professor at USF; Linda Mason, attorney and San Bruno vice mayor; Melissa Harris Rohlfs, chair of the San Bruno Culture and Arts Commission; and Peter Cleaveland, former Bay Area radio and TV reporter.
