Some late-night pile driving is giving residents in San Mateo's North Shoreview neighborhood an earful as they try to catch some sleep in the wee hours of the night.
Police say they've been flooded with calls from residents who say they had no idea the construction was about to get underway. The construction, which was delayed for several months, finally began Tuesday.
Pile driving went to 4 a.m. Wednesday and was slated to end earlier last night.
Earlier this year, Caltrans spokesman Jack Gaines said construction would run from Thursday through Sunday. The thunderous booms were supposed to occur between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.
Gaines said the noise from the construction would last about a month.

Construction for the Third Avenue bridge over Highway 101 was supposed to wrap up Oct. 15, but was delayed because of unforeseen weather conditions.
The idea is to widen the creek below the highway to take the neighborhood off the Federal Emergency Management Agency flood map.
The area was placed on the map three years ago and residents were forced to buy costly flood insurance.
The city has been working on the levee system and making other improvements since.
The reason for the late hours is that two lanes of the four-lane highway must be blocked off for the pile driving. Doing that would cause a major traffic delays during any other time, Gaines said.
