An Arcata resident pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated for an October 2023 car crash off the intersection of Pescadero Creek Road and Highway 1 and into the ocean that resulted in the death of one of her passengers, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
The woman, 25-year-old Madeline St. Pierre, was driving at an “unsafe speed” on Pescadero Creek Road when she drove through the Highway 1 intersection stop sign, crashed through the guardrail and went over the cliff. Her car, a 2021 Kia, landed at the bottom of the cliff in the ocean with herself and two passengers inside, according to the DA’s Office.
The passenger in the back seat died of his injuries, while the front seat passenger survived with only a broken wrist. St. Pierre suffered a fractured tailbone.
Her blood alcohol level three hours after the crash was recorded at .029%, under the legal limit; however, Wagstaffe said the toxicologist could work backward to show she was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
She will be sentenced to up to two years in state prison, Wagstaffe said.
