A neighbor dispute in South San Francisco’s Rancho Buri Buri neighborhood Francisco led to a police officer-involved shooting, leaving a 60-year-old man dead.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. April 28, when officers responded to a call on Arroyo Drive. According to a press release from the South San Francisco Police Department, the shooting suspect, Brian Montana “fired at officers from different locations within the driveway while seeking cover and concealment using both vehicles in the driveway and landscaping.” Two officers fired their weapons, leaving Montana dead at the scene.
District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Montana became upset over his neighbor’s tree branches and leaves spilling into his yard. The altercation escalated with the suspect shooting multiple weapons, including a handgun, shotgun and rifle.
“On the shooter’s side, there was some alcohol involved,” Wagstaffe said. “His death is a tragedy, but it’s fortunate that nobody else wasn’t hit or injured more seriously.”
The neighbor involved in the dispute was injured from a grazed wound and taken to the hospital, though the injuries have not been reported as life threatening.
Dan and Nan, who did not want to give their last names, have lived in the neighborhood for about 40 years and describe it as relatively safe and quiet, though there have been a few incidents, some drug related, in the last few years that raised some concerns.
“It started happening in the last few years. That’s when we got an alarm system,” Dan said.
Dan heard some of the gunshots and sirens last night and eventually received county alerts telling them to shelter in place, which lasted for a couple hours into the evening.
“It is very unsettling,” Dan said. “You really don’t know what people are going through.”
Cory David has also lived in the neighborhood for decades and knows the neighbor who was injured.
“He’s a terrific person, and I wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to him,” David said.
As of 1 p.m. April 29, the 300 block of Arroyo Drive was closed off as part of an ongoing investigation.
“He fired a lot of rounds, so we’re grateful there aren’t others that were taken out,” Wagstaffe said.
He added the District Attorney’s Office hopes to complete a full investigation within 60 days.

The article incorrectly states that this happened in Winston Manor. This happened in the Rancho Buri Buri neighborhood in South San Francisco.
You are correct, thank you. We have changed the story to reflect the correct neighborhood.
