The neo-pilgrims came to Stanford University Friday.
The Dalai Lama held a mass meditation session before throngs of people at the Maples Pavilion Friday morning and still many more waited outside to catch a glimpse of the Buddhist spiritual leader.
The streets surrounding Stanford University were packed Friday morning as thousands who had not received tickets tried to get as close as possible to the event.
The Dalai Lama conducted a meditation, followed by a talk and a question and answer session. The Dalai Lama is also scheduled to hold a daylong dialogue Saturday with neuroscientists from Stanford and other universities and Buddhist scholars to explore the potential for alleviating human suffering.
More information about his two-day visit to Stanford University is available online at http://dalailama.stanford.edu.

with scissors in the heart
A 13-year-old student at Glenbrook Middle School in Concord stabbed a 14-year-old classmate with a pair of scissors on Thursday as other students looked on, Concord police Sgt. Darrell Graham said Friday.
Officers dispatched to the school found the victim and suspect in one of the school’s classrooms, said police.
The victim was taken to Children’s Hospital in Oakland and underwent surgery for a stab wound to the chest, said Graham, who added that "an unconfirmed report” suggested the boy’s heart had been stabbed.
The boy is reported to be in stable condition, according to police. A Children’s Hospital spokeswoman could not be immediately reached for comment.
The suspect was arrested and taken to juvenile hall in Contra Costa County.
Graham said there is "no history of violence between the two that was reported by the school” but that police "are researching whether or not there was an unreported history of violence.”<
