So many people have tried accessing the Department of Justice's Megan's Law Web site since Wednesday, when it became available to the public, that the system has overloaded and won't allow some users to log on.
"We've had 3 million successful hits in 24 hours,'' Mariam Bedrosian, spokeswoman for state Attorney General Bill Lockyer's office, said today.
"The success rate is amazing. We never expected this."
The Web site, http://meganslaw.ca.gov, contains information on more than 63,000 sex offenders in California.
Specific home addresses are displayed on 33,500 of the more serious offenders in the state. An additional 30,500 offenders are listed on the site by ZIP code, city, and county, according to the attorney general's Web site.
Bedrosian said staff are working on the site to make sure as many people as possible can access it.
She anticipates that the demand will wane soon because it's not a site to which most people will need repeated or frequent access.
