SAN JOSE — San Jose water enthusiasts and nature lovers once again have direct access to San Francisco Bay with the opening Saturday of a new boat-launching facility.
Hundreds of onlookers celebrated the opening of the new Alviso Marina, which includes a pier for motorized vessels and another for kayaks and canoes.
Local politicians said the facility in San Jose’s Alviso community would help revitalize the area.
"It’s a great day in the South Bay,” San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed said. "Finally the South Bay can get to the bay.”
Area residents previously had access to the bay after Santa Clara County built a marina in 1968. But that marina was abandoned in 1985 when the channel became consistently clogged with silt.
The new facility, located in Alviso Marina County Park, provides access to the bay through a 4-mile-long serpentine channel.

With dredging, boats up to 30-feet will be able make their way through the channel at high tide, according to Ubaldo Perez, a county official who helped oversee the ramp and pier project.
The new ramps and piers were scheduled for completion in 2007, but environmental studies, negotiations over land-use issues and funding matters delayed the work.
The surrounding park land has also been improved, undergoing a 2005 renovation that included new hiking trails, picnic areas and flood-control levees.
