The man who died Wednesday after a fight with San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies has been identified by the county coroner as Chinedu Valentine Okobi, 36.
Okobi lived in nearby Redwood City, according to the Coroner’s Office.
He was running in and out of traffic on the 1300 block of El Camino Real in Millbrae at about 1 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Okobi then allegedly assaulted a deputy who contacted him. Four more deputies were called and at least one of them used a Taser on Okobi, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
Okobi died at Mills-Peninsula Medical Center. The deputy who first contacted Okobi was also taken to the hospital and has since been released.
Wagstaffe said Okobi was not armed during the confrontation.
He said he didn’t yet know the details of why it escalated. Prosecutors will be interviewing the five deputies to get more information.
All five are on paid leave, Wagstaffe said.
He will issue a full report in eight to 10 weeks, and said he doesn’t expect many updates before then.
Per the San Mateo County Police Chiefs and Sheriff Association Officer Involved Critical Incident Protocol, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office and San Mateo County Coroner’s Office are handling investigation of this incident.
Wagstaffe said the autopsy was scheduled for Thursday. The Coroner’s Office said Thursday afternoon that it hadn’t yet determined the cause of Okobi’s death.
In August, a 55-year-old man died after a struggle with Redwood City officers, who deployed a Taser multiple times on him.
