A 37-year-old Belmont stockbroker was shot at and died on Interstate 280 on his way to work yesterday morning.
Police believe Michael Fields' black 2000 Mercedes Benz was shot at and veered off the road just south of Edgewood Road in Woodside. The car then tumbled down the steep hill and hit a tree near Cañada and Runnymede roads. The car had "catastrophic damage," including gun shots, Sheriff Don Horsley said at a press conference yesterday in Redwood City.
Investigators believe the incident occurred between 2:30 a.m. and 3 a.m., shortly after he left his Belmont home for his office in San Jose. Police didn't find out about the incident until the California Highway Patrol responded to a 6:54 a.m. 911 call from someone who said they saw the crashed car.
The investigation turned up a discharged gun in the center divide of 280 near the scene.
There were also skid marks on the road, but police are still trying to determine if they are associated with this incident, said Capt. Fritz Eberly of the CHP.
Coroner Robert Foucrault was at the press conference but declined to comment. Horsley said they wouldn't discuss the cause of death until the coroner's report is complete.

Yesterday's press conference was held in front of the San Mateo County courthouse under the same tent Peterson pundits often occupy. With network and local stations filming, officials said people shouldn't fear for their safety.
"At this time, based on our information, we believe this is an isolated incident," Eberly said.
Eberly said in 22 years this is only second case of this type he's worked.
Anyone with potential information on the crash is urged to call Detective Bob Arnaudo at (650) 363-7823 or the Sheriff's department's anonymous tip line at (800) 547-2700.
