A Redwood City man accused of stealing a smartwatch from a 26-year-old woman at gunpoint as she was walking in Redwood Shores last year was sentenced to nine years state prison Thursday, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
In February, Darian Rodriguez Peralta, 22, pleaded no contest to a charge of robbery for the June 15, 2017, incident in which he approached the woman as she was walking on Bridge Parkway on the western end of the neighborhood just after 8 p.m. He is believed to have pulled out a gun and threatened to shoot the woman if she did not give him what she had with her, according to prosecutors.
Peralta is said to have rummaged through the woman’s jacket and pants pocket before fleeing when another pedestrian approached them, according to prosecutors.
Their interaction was captured on surveillance footage shot from a nearby home and Peralta was later identified from the footage. The clothes he was wearing at the scene of the crime were later found in his home, according to prosecutors.
Judge Stephanie Garratt allegedly said she denied the defense’s motion to ask Peralta’s prior felony conviction not be considered in his sentencing, noting she does not like to send young people to prison but decided to go with the maximum sentence because of his prior record and violent behavior, according to prosecutors.
Peralta, who has been in custody $250,000 bail, will receive 500 days credit for time served and was ordered to pay the victim $489.32 in restitution, according to prosecutors.
