A jury convicted a man who imprisoned a woman in a Belmont hotel of 33 felonies Thursday.
Ian Kroe, 55, struck up a friendship with the victim — a lifetime friend of his mother — moving from Minnesota to be closer to her after his mother’s death. He drained her accounts, virtually imprisoned her in the Belmont Hyatt Hotel for over a year and raped her numerous times, the DA’s Office said previously.
Both the victim and Kroe testified during the trial, Wagstaffe said, with Kroe alleging that all acts performed were consensual and she was controlling him via witchcraft. A jury ultimately convicted Kroe of 33 felony counts, including torture, rape and elder abuse.
But it was her testimony of the abuse she endured that the jury believed, Wagstaffe said.
“This is a pretty noteworthy case, as our cases go,” Wagstaffe said. “I thought she was extremely incredible as a witness and obviously the jury found so too.”
The jury will reconvene Monday to hear arguments for whether Kroe should be convicted on aggravated charges, Wagstaffe said. He faces life in prison based on Thursday’s convictions alone.
