A South San Francisco man faces a lengthy prison term on an attempted murder charge after he allegedly shot a man in an effort to steal marijuana near two South San Francisco schools Jan. 24, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
When Miles Seegmiller, 20, appeared in court Monday, the county’s private defender program was appointed to his case. He will next appear in court Feb. 5 for appearance of counsel and to set a preliminary hearing date, according to prosecutors.
On Jan. 24, Seegmiller allegedly set up a deal to buy half a pound of marijuana from another man, who met with Seegmiller in the backseat of a car parking on the 200 block of Camaritas Avenue, which is near Buri Buri Elementary School and Alta Loma Middle School, according to prosecutors and police.
Seegmiller allegedly immediately pulled out a revolver, shot the victim in the neck and instructed his girlfriend to take the marijuana, who grabbed it out of fear before they fled from the car, according to prosecutors.
The shooting victim, whose chin was lacerated, allegedly sought help from staff at the elementary school after the shooting and was eventually taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for injuries that were not life threatening, according to prosecutors and police.
The shooting caused both schools to be placed under “secure campus” status, meaning that doors were locked and entrance and exit from the schools were temporarily restricted. Both schools went back to normal operating status within 30 minutes of the initial report of the shooting, police said previously.
Seegmiller’s girlfriend has not been listed as a co-defendant in his charges, which also include possession of a controlled substance after Seegmiller was found with Xanax upon his arrest nearby the scene of the incident, according to prosecutors and police.
