A man was charged with felony assault with a semiautomatic weapon for allegedly firing a round near a 17-year-old boy in San Mateo Feb. 12, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
The man, Alfredo Chavez, 45, of San Jose, allegedly began following the teen while he was walking to catch the bus at 9 a.m. on the 800 block of North Humboldt Street, Wagstaffe said. Chavez was allegedly accompanied by an unidentified woman.
After yelling at the teen, he fired a round near him, at which point the boy ran around a corner. Chavez allegedly believed the teen to be a part of a gang, Wagstaffe said, although the teen said he was not.
Chavez pleaded not guilty and has a preliminary hearing set for March 10. He is in jail on a $100,000 bail, Wagstaffe said.
