A 24-year-old man suspected of trying to abduct a student from a high school classroom in Redwood City was arrested Thursday afternoon, according to police.
The suspect, Trey Duus, entered a classroom at Sequoia High School about 2 p.m., allegedly grabbed a male student and tried to pull him out of the room, Redwood City police said.
A teacher intervened, causing the suspect to flee. Duus reportedly told staff that he had a gun and not to touch him as he fled.
When police responded, the school, at 1201 Brewster Ave., was put on lockdown while officers searched for the suspect. They found him as he was leaving a school building on the west side of the campus.
“Duus was holding a long cylindrical object, later determined to be an umbrella, as he exited the building,” police said in a news release Thursday evening.

The suspect resisted when officers tried to detain him and they used unspecified less-lethal force options to subdue him.
Police said Duus had also punched a hole in a bathroom wall and stolen a printer cartridge as he fled through the school and prior to being arrested.
Duus suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for a medical check. Police said he was cleared at the hospital and would be booked in the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of attempted kidnapping, burglary, child endangerment, obstructing officers, vandalism and trespassing on school grounds.
Support was provided by Redwood City police to ensure all students and staff were safe and the matter was resolved. In an abundance of caution, students and staff were directed to stay in classrooms, according to a statement from the Sequoia Union High School District.
“We are grateful for our students’ cooperation, the swift action of our security team and summer school staff, and the strong partnership with RCPD,” the statement said.
