Hotel housekeepers in South San Francisco are fighting for their jobs in what union leaders are calling a potential milestone in the business.
The housekeepers will rally today in front of the Comfort Suites in South San Francisco after they lost their jobs to lower paid contractors. If they don't get their jobs back, hotels throughout the Peninsula may follow suit and hire lower-paid non-union workers.
"This will be the litmus test," said Anang Sinah, a representative of the Restaurant and Hotel Employees Union, Local 340.
The 18 women fired are immigrants and some are single mothers. One woman was eight months pregnant when she was let go. They were replaced with by Paramount Hospitality Management by sub-contractors working for Jani-King, said Sinah.
This is the first time in 30 years that hotel housekeepers have lost their jobs to sub-contractors. If the women can't get their jobs back, it could mean that other hotels will follow the lead and hire cheaper sub-contractors, said Sinah.

"These woman have worked hard making the beds, vacuuming the floors and cleaning toilets for many years. Many have worked at the hotel over 13 years and some since the hotel was built in 1986," Sherri Chiesa, trustee of Local 340, said in a press release yesterday.
The women and a number of union and interfaith community leaders will be in front of Comfort Suites at 121 E. Grand Ave. at 4 p.m.
Calls to the Dallas-based Jani-King were not returned. Hotel officials were unavailable for comment.
