Protests over the Israel-Hamas war have spread across U.S. university and college campuses in recent weeks, leading to disruptions and arrests. Some demonstrations extended into weekend graduation celebrations, although they were muted in comparison to the encampments and rallies that have roiled campuses. Most of the commencement exercises took place Saturday and Sunday as scheduled and remained largely peaceful. Dozens of the 7,000 graduates at Duke University in North Carolina left their seats to protest pro-Israel speaker and comedian Jerry Seinfeld. In Los Angeles, a few dozen pro-Palestinian protesters tried to block access to the Pomona College commencement. Student protesters at Boston's Emerson College occasionally erupted into chants during the graduation ceremony.

President Joe Biden is opposing the planned sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel of Japan, saying the U.S. needs "strong American steel companies powered by American steel workers." The announcement Thursday comes as the Democratic president campaigns in the Midwest and could have ripples in his race against Republican Donald Trump. Nippon Steel announced in December it plans to buy the Pittsburgh-based steel producer for $14 billion in cash. That raised concerns within the federal government about what the transaction could mean for unionized workers, supply chains and U.S. national security. Nippon Steel promises no job losses and says it's committed to keeping U.S. Steel's Pittsburgh headquarters.

Thousands of ride-hailing and delivery workers in the U.S. and the U.K. went on strike on Valentine's Day in an effort to win better pay. In the U.S., Uber and Lyft drivers plan daylong strikes in Chicago, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Miami and other cities. Workers also plan to hold midday demonstrations at airports. In the U.K., thousands of couriers for Uber Eats, Just Eat, Deliveroo and Stuart planned to strike between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Uber said Tuesday it doesn't expect the strikes to have much impact on its operations on Valentine's Day, because most workers are satisfied.

Flight attendants for major U.S. airlines are holding rallies at airports around the country to push for higher pay. Tuesday's protests are not, however, a strike. Federal law makes it difficult for airline unions to go on strike. Flight attendants are frustrated that pilots won huge pay raises last year while they continue to work for wages that, in some cases, have not increased in several years. The protests are being organized by three unions that represent cabin crews at American, United, Southwest and several smaller airlines.

President Joe Biden is celebrating his recent endorsement by the United Auto Workers union during a visit to Michigan. But his visit on Thursday to the critical battleground state with the nation's highest density of Arab Americans threatens to be overshadowed by growing anger over U.S. support for Israel's war in Gaza. Biden's trip to the Detroit area will include meetings with UAW workers just days after the union offered its endorsement. However, the Democratic president's Michigan schedule does not include any meetings with Arab Americans, adding to increasing frustration within a key voting bloc over his full-throated support of Israel in its war with Hamas. Hundreds of protesters are already gathered ahead of his speech.

Former President Donald Trump is meeting with members of the Teamsters Union in Washington as he looks past the GOP primary and toward a general election rematch against President Joe Biden. The former president participated in a roundtable Wednesday afternoon with the group's executive board, its president and rank-and-file members. The meeting is part of Trump's effort to win over the blue-collar workers who fueled his 2016 victory and who are expected to play a major role in November, particularly in critical Midwestern swing states like Wisconsin and Michigan.
