Editor,
After authoring the unkind, yet factual, Feb. 6 San Mateo Daily Journal letter addressing state Sen. Scott Wiener’s historically self-promoting political activities, I felt bound to respond to Rob Baxter who came to his defense.

Editor,
After authoring the unkind, yet factual, Feb. 6 San Mateo Daily Journal letter addressing state Sen. Scott Wiener’s historically self-promoting political activities, I felt bound to respond to Rob Baxter who came to his defense.
I couldn’t help but notice Mr. Baxter’s praise centered exclusively on housing, specifically built with union labor. Perhaps I am sensitive to this issue as my city has been repeatedly visited by housing developer/organized labor interests when new housing is on the table. Let me be clear, these individuals do not live in South San Francisco but are acting as mercenaries in their own self-interest. For most of them, this activity is their paid job.
Fair disclosure, while retired, I am grateful for my comfortable lifestyle having had a union job in the construction industry. My livelihood and, ultimately, my retirement relied on a steady stream of construction jobs. I liked to keep working just like anybody in my industry. Even with that being the case, day’s pay or not, I would never go to someone’s home to dictate to them how to configure it or the quality of life they would be forced to accept. That is exactly what Mr. Wiener has done to his adopted, yet unloved, home of California. By extension, it is exactly what the visiting housing developer/organized labor advocates, try to do as well.
And, before we mistake Mr. Wiener’s actions as altruism, I ask you to take the time to check his campaign coffers. He is clearly beholden to housing and labor interests.
