A research group headed by San Mateo Medical Center is one of only five teams to split a $15.3 million University of California grant earmarked to develop a new center for HIV/AIDS study.
"This is a huge shot in the arm to build our research capabilities," said hospital spokesman Dave Hook.
The four-year grants by the Universitywide AIDS Research Program are given to centers that promote innovative tactics in under-researched communities, Hook said.
With the grant, the medical center will work the Stanford University Medical School and the San Francisco Department of Public Health to create new ways to detect, prevent and treat HIV and AIDS in the greater Bay Area.
"Our successful application validates the long, hard work and 'out-of-the-box' vision of our group," Dr. Dennis Israelski, medical director of the Health Department's AIDS Program, said in a press release.
