• Assemblymen Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, Jared Huffman, D-Marin, and Pedro Nava, D-Santa Barbara, introduced legislation this week calling on the federal government to oppose a proposal by the International Whaling Commission (IWC), the international governing body tasked with the regulation of whaling, to lift a 24-year whaling moratorium. The introduction of Assembly Joint Resolution 44 comes on the heels of increased public concern about a plan by the IWC to remove the current moratorium on commercial whaling and allow the resumption of whale hunting. In 1986, the IWC implemented a pause on commercial whaling to allow the recovery of whale stocks, which had become significantly depleted due to whaling.
• The Assembly Education Committee approved legislation in response to curriculum changes made in Texas last month. Despite receiving broad bipartisan support in the Senate, the bill to ensure California textbooks are not affected by the Texas alterations was passed in the Assembly committee on a 6-2 party-line vote. Specifically, SB 1451, authored by state Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco/San Mateo, would require the California State Board of Education to review all social studies textbooks used in the state to ensure that they have not been changed as a result of textbook changes in Texas.
