State government

• Assemblymen Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, Jared Huffman, D-Marin, and Pedro Nava, D-Santa Barbara, introduced legislation this week calling on the federal government to oppose a proposal by the International Whaling Commission (IWC), the international governing body tasked with the regulation of whaling, to lift a 24-year whaling moratorium. The introduction of Assembly Joint Resolution 44 comes on the heels of increased public concern about a plan by the IWC to remove the current moratorium on commercial whaling and allow the resumption of whale hunting. In 1986, the IWC implemented a pause on commercial whaling to allow the recovery of whale stocks, which had become significantly depleted due to whaling.
