SAN FRANCISCO — A former San Francisco crime lab technician accused of skimming drugs held as evidence tells police in an interview that she used cocaine found at work.
In the transcript of a February interview obtained by the Associated Press, Deborah Madden told investigators that that she started using the drug last fall to mask a drinking problem.
Madden said she took cocaine that spilled at her work station after she was done testing it as evidence. She said she only used the drugs at home.
Madden’s attorney, Paul DeMeester, said his client’s statements indicate that any alleged drug use is recent and does not affect any city drug cases prior to last fall.
Police closed the drug unit lab last month after alleging that Madden stole cocaine evidence. She has not been charged.
