Musician Shane McLaughlin christens the new community piano in Redwood City, crafted by renowned artist Fernando Escartiz.
A community piano unveiled just two weeks ago was vandalized and needs immediate repair, the Redwood City Improvement Association announced Thursday.
Someone cut off the protective cover and damaged a key, according to the association. The piano, across the street from the public library and between City Hall and Italian restaurant Donato Enoteca, was intended to serve as a vibrant gathering place for creativity and connection, according to the association.
“As the organization works toward restoration, they encourage community participation to ensure the piano can return as a cherished focal point for gatherings and artistic expression in downtown Redwood City,” according to a statement by the association.
The piano is the first of three — two baby grands and an upright — that is part of the community project centered around “Sights, Sounds and Tastes.”
