A former Millbrae fire chief and San Mateo native has been named the new city of San Mateo fire chief, city officials announced yesterday.
Brian Kelly, who is currently the Union City fire chief, will assume his new position March 3, said San Mateo City Manager Arne Croce.
?San Mateo is extremely fortunate to have Brian Kelly join the city organization,? Croce said in a written statement. ?Brian is a highly skilled and respected fire chief, experienced municipal executive and dedicated public servant. I look forward to the passion he brings to his work and value he will add to our community.?
As the Union City fire chief since 2000, Kelly reestablished the fire department after a merger with the Fremont Fire Department was dissolved. Before that he served as Millbrae?s fire chief for 12 years, helping to improve emergency services in the county, Croce said. Kelly started his career as a firefighter in Millbrae, climbing the ranks to captain before he moved to Sonoma County where he served as assistant chief and fire marshal.
?I am thrilled to be joining the city of San Mateo family as fire chief,? Kelly said in a written statement. ?Working together, the San Mateo Fire Department will be a leader in developing strategies to improve the quality and efficiency of Fire and Emergency Services.?
A graduate of Serra High School, Kelly has a degree from St. Mary?s College in Business Management and participated in the National Academy?s Executive Officer Program.
