Carol Elliott, the longest tenured member of the San Carlos Elementary School District Board of Trustees, announced her intent to resign from the school board in May.
Elliott, who has served on the board for roughly 11 years, announced her plans to depart Thursday, April 8. Her term was slated to expire next year.
During her time on the board, Elliott has twice served as president — and most recently last year, as the district navigated through the unique challenges posed by the pandemic.
Board President Neil Layton expressed his appreciation to Elliott in a prepared statement.

“The simple way to put it is the San Carlos School District is better off for having Carol’s dedication to our kids and our schools. Carol will be missed, and the Board wishes her the best in her next endeavors, but knows she will always continue to play an active role in the San Carlos School District,” he said.
Beyond her time on the board, Elliott has contributed to the district’s PTA and education foundation and helped organized parcel tax and bond campaigns. Outside of her public efforts, Layton credited Elliot’s work privately to advance the interests of the district.
“Behind the scenes, Carol has been a lifelong advocate for public education and I have personally watched her push county and state leaders to properly fund public education and commit to equal access for all,” he said.
Elliott’s departure comes as the district searches for a new top administrator, following the retirement of Superintendent Michelle Harmeier earlier this year. Elliott’s longtime colleague on the board, former trustee Kathleen Farley, resigned from the district last year as well.
Officials expect to discuss the process for finding a new trustee to fill Elliott’s vacancy at a board meeting later this month. The district has the option to hold a special election or appoint a new member.
