The state’s retirement agency is investigating whether Ron Galatolo, the former community college district chancellor, should lose his pension following his conviction of eight felony counts, a spokesperson said.
Galatolo was found guilty by a jury Jan. 20. The California Public Employees’ Retirement System will now “begin reviewing documents and determine the impact to his retirement benefit,” Amy Morgan, information officer for the state agency, said in a statement.
Galatolo’s monthly pension is $21,116.59 and he receives a replacement benefit plan payment in the sum of $6,007.61. The replacement benefit plan payment is paid to the retiree once the employer pays their invoice, Morgan said.
Galatolo was found guilty of four counts of perjury and four counts of willfully filing false tax returns, as well as not guilty on one count of perjury. Two of the perjury counts related to failing to disclose gifts on government forms during his time as chancellor.
Whether these convictions are sufficiently job-related, and could affect his job pension, will be determined by CalPERS.
