Burlingame’s long-awaited Topgolf will have its grand opening this Friday, offering over 100 golf bays, fully stocked bars and kitchens and a breathtaking view of the Bay to customers.
Marketing itself as part golf facility, part party and conference venue and part sports bar, the appeal of Topgolf is that all skill levels and interests can join in on the fun, Sales Director Katie Hedling said.
“I don’t play golf, and I can come in and hit the ball. We also have a golf pro that walks around and gives pointers to people, gives lessons and things like that. It’s something we also offer with our events,” she said.
And now, after a 14-month construction period, experienced golfers looking for all-weather practice can swing a club alongside those celebrating or learning a new skill.
Burlingame is also excited about the benefits Topgolf will bring to the local community, including a lush new training facility for Burlingame High School’s golf team and first-time employment for many local students, Mayor Donna Colson said.
“They had presentations to the high school kids interested in hospitality work, and they hired dozens of those kids,” she said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for our local students to gain real-life skills.”
A soft launch earlier this week had provided an exciting opportunity for around 450 staff members, known as playmakers, to interact with new customers, Hedling said.
“It’s loud and there’s music on and people are having fun, and there’s drinks and food coming out of the kitchen,” she said. “It’s been fun to see our new playmakers … after all this training they’ve done, really apply it to the players in the building.”
Topgolf will be both a source of entertainment and income as it draws visitors from Burlingame, San Mateo County and beyond, Colson said.
“We feel very strongly that this recreation facility will draw people into our hotels, bring people to San Mateo County. It will be a tourist attraction and a business attraction,” she said.
Topgolf, in addition to being a purveyor of birthday and holiday parties, also regularly hosts company and corporate events and has three dedicated conference rooms and four private rooms.
“I imagine a lot of corporate people team bonding, team building, getting out of the office, trying to have fun,” Hedling said.
Topgolf also features two indoor swing suite simulator bays, indoor games like Sonic the Hedgehog, a 36-foot video wall and outdoor fire pits, among others.
The official ribbon cutting will take place at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. Regular hours are 9 a.m. to 12 a.m. Monday through Thursday and Sunday and 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
