Construction will begin next month on the bike and pedestrian crossing under Highway 101 that will link the Bayfront communities east of the highway to downtown Redwood City.
The project is expected to be complete within seven months, which means it should be in use by November if everything goes according to plan.
The undercrossing will be adjacent to Redwood Creek along an informal path already used by many people to avoid having to cross the highway over Whipple Avenue or Maple Street.
The 14-foot-wide path will meet class I bike lane criteria and it will connect the class I bike path along Bair Island Road to the Class II bike lanes on Main Street.

The path will be 700 feet long with up to 10 feet of headroom under the highway where there is now just 5 feet of clearance.
The project will also include the construction of a retaining wall on the creek side of the path to protect against flooding and the top portion of the wall will have a 1-foot-high metal railing that is not solid so passersby will be able to see the creek.
The project also includes landscape improvements and site furniture, new lighting, a storm water drainage system, signs and daily site cleanup.
The city is shelling out nearly $4 million for construction and that was the cheapest bid. Engineers in the past have said that building a crossing over Highway 101, on the other hand, would cost tens of millions of dollars.
The project was funded by developer fees and a $500,000 grant from the San Mateo County Transportation Authority.
